At Challenge Design , we’re passionate about telling stories through our designs—stories of dedication, innovation, and honor. Working with the Space Force has been an especially exciting chapter for us. As the newest branch of the U.S. military, the Space Force represents the future of defense and exploration, taking on the unique challenges of protecting our nation's interests beyond Earth. Designing challenge coins for the Space Force isn’t just about capturing the look; it’s about embedding their spirit of forward-thinking and technological prowess into every detail. From incorporating their motto “Semper Supra” to highlighting their global connections, each coin we craft aims to be a lasting tribute to this pioneering branch.

From their inception, the Space Force has stood as a guardian of a new frontier: space. Their mission may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but in reality, it’s vital to our modern world. Officially launched in 2019, its mission is to ensure that we can operate safely in space, whether it's defending satellites that help us navigate or safeguarding the technology that powers communication and defense systems. Space is a huge part of modern life, from GPS to missile defense, and the Space Force is there to make sure we stay ahead in this new frontier. Think of them as guardians of the final frontier, making sure space stays secure for us all!

The Space Force, being the newest branch of the U.S. military, makes working on projects for them particularly exciting and noteworthy. As pioneers in the next great frontier of defense, their mission is shaping the future of military operations in the 21st century. With such a significant role, designing for the Space Force feels particularly exciting—almost like contributing to history in the making. Every project we design for the Space Force feels like contributing to history in the making, as their work will have a lasting impact on how we protect our assets and interests beyond Earth. It’s not just about the present, but laying the foundation for future generations as space becomes a critical domain for national security.

XXI- 21st century

This vision aligns perfectly with our design process as we merge tradition with 21st-century innovation. The Space Force is a game-changer for the 21st century, representing the future of defense and innovation in a rapidly evolving world. As the newest branch of the U.S. military, it’s focused on protecting our interests beyond Earth—satellites, communication systems, and other space-based technologies that we rely on daily. What’s truly exciting is that the Space Force is shaping the way we think about security in space, a frontier that will only grow more important in the coming years. Being part of such groundbreaking work feels like helping write the next chapter of human exploration and defense.

The Space Force embodies the essence of 21st-century innovation, and incorporating that spirit into our challenge coin designs has been an exciting challenge. We aim to capture the futuristic vision and technological prowess that define this new branch of the military. From sleek, modern lines to bold representations of space and cyber defense elements, each design element reflects the Space Force’s pivotal role in shaping the future. It's about merging tradition with cutting-edge technology, just as the Space Force does every day in protecting our nation in the digital age.

Space Force Locations

But the future doesn’t just live in space. It’s also reflected in the locations the Space Force operates from—Hula, Reef, Guam, and Cook, each vital to its mission. Something truly fascinating about the Space Force are the locations where the Space Force is based, each playing a critical role in its mission. Hula, Reef, Guam, and Cook—these aren't just names on a map, but vital hubs of innovation and strategy. Each location contributes to the force’s global reach, ensuring that America remains at the forefront of space exploration and defense.

While working on designs that represent Space Force, we knew it would be important to incorporate these locations. Each site has its own story, from the strategic positioning of Guam in the Pacific to the advanced space operations happening at Hula and Reef. Incorporating elements from these unique locations into our challenge coins would allow us to celebrate the diversity and forward-thinking nature of the Space Force. It's more than just a design; it's a tribute to the important work being done to secure our future in the 21st century and beyond. As we captured the spirit of their locations in our designs, we also knew we had to pay tribute to their powerful motto: "Semper Supra."

Space Force Motto

Space Force Squadron Challenge Coin motto

The Space Force's motto, "Semper Supra", means "Always Above", and it’s more than just words—it’s a promise. This reflects their mission to protect and defend from the highest frontier: space. Whether it’s safeguarding satellites or ensuring our military’s communication, the Space Force is always looking out for us from above. Their dedication to staying "always above" is key to keeping the U.S. ahead in space operations and security.

Including elements like official mottos in a challenge coin design is crucial for creating something that truly resonates and has a lasting impact. Mottos encapsulate the values, mission, and spirit of an organization, giving the coin deeper meaning beyond its visual appeal. When we incorporate these powerful words, we ensure that the coin becomes a timeless reminder of the commitment and excellence it represents, making it a cherished keepsake for years to come. Incorporating mottos into challenge coins adds deeper significance, but it’s also the people behind the mission that are truly inspirational.

With so much inspiration, creating the challenge coin for the 21st Space Operations Squadron was a special honor for our team. We couldn’t be prouder of the final design! This antique silver coin captures the essence of the 21st Operations Squadron, showcasing a custom-cut blue oval center that prominently features their emblem. Surrounding the emblem, four delta triangles connect to the outer circle, creating a striking visual effect. The outer circle proudly displays the words "21st Space Operations Squadron: Gateway to the Stars," embodying the squadron's vital role in space operations. And of course, we couldn’t forget the official motto, "Semper Supra"—"Always Above"—serving as a constant reminder of their commitment to excellence.

The symbolism doesn’t stop there, though. On the reverse side, we continued to celebrate their global connections. This design includes four black triangles representing key locations—Hula, Reef, Guam, and Cook—each adding significance to the squadron's international presence. Four black triangles connect to the outer circle, each representing significant locations with names and a white map icon This thoughtful inclusion not only adds to the coin’s aesthetic but also highlights the squadron's global connections and mission scope. The design continues to impress with a blue cube set against a geometric background. This unique element features a custom number plaque, showcasing the squadron's individuality and pride.

The top of the reverse side proudly states “Presented by the Commander,” emphasizing the importance of this recognition. In one version, the bottom reads “For Superior Performance,” a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication of the squadron members. In another version, we’ve personalized it further by including “LT Col Justin Ru Roque” with his signature in red within the blue cube, making it even more special for the recipients.
