From the National Security Council to the Office of Management and Budget, the EOP is where key strategies and policies are developed and discussed, impacting every facet of American life. The building’s proximity to the White House emphasizes its central role in helping the President navigate complex issues with precision and leadership.
National Security Council (NSC)
Just as the Executive Office of the President (EOP) serves as the nerve center of American policymaking, its individual offices play distinct yet interconnected roles in shaping the nation's future. From national security to groundbreaking scientific advancements, each department within the EOP contributes to decisions that impact millions. National security is one of the most crucial aspects of the EOP's work. The National Security Council (NSC) within the EOP helps the President assess risks, coordinate response strategies, and provide critical analysis on threats facing the nation. It’s where top-level discussions happen between experts, military leaders, and political advisors to ensure the country's safety and global standing. For anyone passionate about defense and foreign policy, understanding the workings of the EOP and its national security apparatus is like getting a glimpse behind the scenes of the decisions that protect and guide America’s future.
The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)
At the forefront of these efforts is the National Security Council (NSC), ensuring that the President is equipped with the intelligence and strategies necessary to safeguard the country. But securing the nation's future isn't just about defense—it’s also about innovation. That’s where the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) comes in, pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery and integrating advancements into national policy.
The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) at the EOP is another pivotal arm of the President’s administration, ensuring that the U.S. remains a global leader in innovation. (OSTP) has been a cornerstone of U.S. government policy since its establishment in 1976. Created by Congress to provide the President with expert advice on scientific and technological matters, the OSTP was designed to ensure that science and technology were central to the nation's policy-making. From guiding space exploration to tackling modern challenges like climate change and artificial intelligence, OSTP has left an indelible mark on history. And what better way to celebrate its legacy than with a challenge coin? Designing a coin for OSTP meant capturing not just its achievements but its ongoing mission to push the frontiers of knowledge.
Creating an OSTP (Office of Science and Technology Policy) challenge coin was an incredible experience for our team. We were honored to bring to life a design that so strongly represents the innovative spirit and crucial role OSTP plays in shaping scientific policy in the U.S. The dual-plated antique silver and gold coin is a beautiful combination of tradition and modernity. The raised gold Great Seal of the United States at the center of the coin emphasizes the importance of the office, while the outer ring with “Executive Office of the President of the United States” reinforces its prestigious connection to the highest levels of government.

On the reverse side, we wanted to capture the essence of OSTP’s work in a visually striking way. The detailed raised depiction of the Executive Office of the President building is set against a monochromatic silver backdrop, highlighting the building’s iconic structure. The biotech and technology symbols placed on either side of the building reflect the dual focus of OSTP’s work in fostering innovation in both the sciences and emerging technologies, which have a profound impact on national policy. Below the building, the black band with the words “National Security” ties in the office’s vital role in safeguarding the nation’s technological advancements.

One of the most powerful elements of the coin design is the raised gold owl, which sits majestically at the top of the coin. The owl symbolizes wisdom and vigilance, qualities that are essential for OSTP in guiding scientific and technological policy. The owl also wears a biotech symbol and holds a scroll, symbolizing the office's commitment to advancing knowledge and ensuring that critical information is passed along for the future of innovation. Below the owl, the banner that reads “Established in 1976” honors the year that OSTP was created, acknowledging the longstanding importance of the office.
Lastly, we’ve included custom numbering on the outer border, giving each coin a unique identifier to reflect its special role in commemorating the impact of OSTP. It’s been truly rewarding to work on a coin that so elegantly captures the significance of an organization that drives progress and plays a crucial role in the advancement of technology, security, and science in the United States.
Designing the OSTP challenge coin was more than just an artistic endeavor—it was a way to honor the relentless pursuit of knowledge and progress that this office represents. From landing on the moon to mapping the human genome, from tackling climate change to shaping AI policy, OSTP has been at the center of some of the most groundbreaking advancements in history. Capturing that spirit in metal was no small feat, but we’re proud to say this coin tells a story—one of wisdom, innovation, and national leadership.
Every challenge coin we design has a purpose, and this one is no different. It’s a token of appreciation for those who push the boundaries of science and policy, a keepsake for those who believe in the power of knowledge, and a small but mighty reminder that the future is shaped by those bold enough to innovate. And with the OSTP coin now in the hands of those who drive America’s scientific future, we like to think we’ve added just a little extra shine to the pursuit of progress.
