Crafting the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Memorial Site dedication plaque was not just about marking a location; it was about telling a story—one of unwavering faith, moral conviction, and ultimate sacrifice. As a design team, we understood the weight of this responsibility. Every detail, from the material selection to the etched inscription, was chosen with deep respect for Bonhoeffer’s legacy. This plaque stands as more than just a physical marker—it is a testament to the power of resistance against tyranny and the enduring impact of one man’s courage.
Designing a piece of history requires more than technical precision; it demands an emotional connection to the story being told. Bonhoeffer’s execution at Flossenbürg is a painful yet powerful chapter in history, and this plaque ensures his memory is not just preserved but honored. Our work on this project allowed us to contribute to a larger mission—one that safeguards historical truth and inspires future generations to stand for what is right.
This dedication plaque, unveiled in partnership with leaders committed to preserving history, ensures Bonhoeffer’s voice continues to resonate. As a team, we take immense pride in knowing that this piece will serve as a lasting reminder of his sacrifice, reminding all who visit that the fight for justice and moral integrity is never in vain.
The unveiling of this plaque was made possible through the leadership and dedication of individuals committed to preserving history. Among them was Richard Grenell, who, as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany, played a crucial role in fostering international partnerships and ensuring that America’s historical commitments were upheld.
Richard Grenell - United States Ambassador to Germany
Richard Grenell’s tenure as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany was nothing short of impactful. As the representative of the President and the American people, an ambassador serves as a vital bridge between two nations, fostering diplomacy, promoting U.S. interests, and working to strengthen bilateral relationships. Grenell’s time in Berlin saw him tackling complex issues such as NATO contributions, trade agreements, and international security. His direct and often outspoken approach made him a prominent and sometimes polarizing figure, but there’s no denying his dedication to advancing American interests abroad.
Being a U.S. ambassador is no small task. It requires balancing diplomacy with advocacy, navigating cultural nuances, and addressing sensitive political challenges. Grenell’s role went beyond ceremonial duties; he was actively engaged in shaping policy discussions and ensuring that U.S. values and priorities were clearly articulated on the global stage. His work underscored the importance of ambassadors as key players in maintaining strong international ties. Diplomatic efforts like those led by Grenell often go hand in hand with cultural preservation initiatives. This is where Paul Packer’s work as Chairman of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad became instrumental. His leadership helped protect and recognize sites of immense historical significance, ensuring that the lessons of the past remain accessible to future generations.
Paul Packer - Chairman of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad
Paul Packer’s leadership as chairman of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad was a testament to his commitment to safeguarding cultural history. This commission is dedicated to identifying and protecting sites of significance to the heritage of Americans abroad, such as cemeteries, memorials, and places of worship in Europe. By preserving these spaces, the commission ensures that the stories of our ancestors and the lessons of history remain tangible for future generations. Under Packer’s stewardship, the commission expanded its efforts, highlighting the importance of honoring and preserving the diverse cultural legacies that shape American identity.
As chairman, Packer was an important figurehead and the driving force behind the commission’s initiatives. A chairman leads by setting priorities, fostering collaboration, and ensuring the organization’s goals align with its mission. Packer’s dedication to protecting sites of historical and cultural significance demonstrated the critical role of leadership in preserving the past while inspiring others to value and honor their heritage. His work serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between history, culture, and identity. One of the commission’s most poignant projects was the recognition of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s execution site. By designating this location as a place of remembrance, history is not only preserved but given a voice—one that continues to inspire those who visit and learn about Bonhoeffer’s remarkable courage and moral conviction.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Execution Site
Designating the site of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s execution as an official place of remembrance is a powerful tribute to his life and legacy. It honors not only his ultimate sacrifice but also the profound impact of his work as a theologian, pastor, spy, and martyr. Bonhoeffer’s writings, such as The Cost of Discipleship, challenged believers to embrace a faith of action and conviction, even in the darkest times. His role as a pastor reflected his deep compassion and unwavering commitment to guiding others toward hope, even in the shadow of death.
Bonhoeffer’s involvement in the Abwehr placed him within the resistance to the Nazi regime, where he viewed espionage as a moral extension of his faith. After the failed July 20, 1944, assassination attempt on Hitler, the Gestapo exposed the Abwehr’s resistance efforts, leading to the arrest and execution of many, including Bonhoeffer. His death cemented his legacy as a martyr, inspiring generations to stand firm in their principles. Recognizing his execution site ensures his story of courage and moral defiance continues to resonate, serving as a reminder of the enduring fight for justice and humanity.

Marking the site with a dedication plaque was a deeply meaningful step in this process. This permanent tribute, unveiled on April 14, 2019, ensures that Bonhoeffer’s sacrifice is never forgotten, standing as a symbol of resilience and resistance against oppression.
serves as a lasting tribute to Bonhoeffer's sacrifice and to the memory of the thousands who perished at the Flossenbürg concentration camp. Every detail of the plaque was carefully considered to reflect the profound significance of this site and its historical impact.
To further extend the impact of this dedication, we also created miniature replica challenge coins. These tangible keepsakes allow individuals to carry a piece of history with them, keeping Bonhoeffer’s legacy alive in a personal and meaningful way. These custom-shaped square coins in antique gold encapsulate the plaque's design and inscription, allowing individuals to carry a physical reminder of Bonhoeffer’s legacy. At the center of the coin, a black color-filled area bears the full plaque inscription, framed by raised seals in each corner representing the President of the United States, the Vice President, the Department of State, and the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad. These seals symbolize the collective recognition and respect for Bonhoeffer’s life and contributions.
The plaque inscription itself is both poignant and powerful. It reads:

"The U.S. Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad recognizes the Flossenbürg Memorial Site as historically significant to the heritage of the United States of America. The Commission specifically recognizes the contributions of German theologian and dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was murdered here on 9 April 1945."
The inscription goes on to acknowledge the collaborative effort of various institutions and individuals, emphasizing the universal importance of remembering such a site. These words convey a message of unity, historical responsibility, and reverence for those who stood against tyranny, making the plaque a cornerstone of remembrance.

The reverse of the replica coins adds a personal touch, featuring an American flag border around a black square with a gold frame. Inside, the text reads, “Compliments of Richard Grenell, United States Ambassador to Germany & Paul Packer, U.S. Commission for the Preservation of American Heritage Abroad.” This thoughtful inclusion highlights the leadership and dedication of those who spearheaded this project, bridging the memory of Bonhoeffer’s legacy with the contemporary commitment to preserving history.
These plaques and their replica coins are beautiful commemorative objects. they are storytellers, preserving the narrative of resilience, faith, and moral courage. They serve as a call to remember the past and ensure its lessons guide us toward a more just and compassionate future.
The creation of these plaques and coins was not our first project honoring Bonhoeffer.
