The 80th anniversary of Camp David, the presidential retreat nestled in Maryland's Catoctin Mountain Park, marks a significant milestone in its storied history. Since its establishment by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942, Camp David has served as a haven for presidents and their guests, providing a secluded setting for diplomacy, relaxation, and reflection amidst the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. Over the decades, Camp David has played host to numerous historic events, including peace negotiations, summit meetings, and presidential retreats, shaping its legacy as a symbol of American leadership and resilience. As Camp David commemorates eight decades of service to the nation, it continues to embody the values of security, diplomacy, and tranquility that have defined its role in American history.

The Shangri-La to Camp David Coin: 80 Years of Quiet Power

There’s something about holding this coin that feels... reverent. Like you’re not just holding a piece of metal—you’re holding the key to a story that’s been whispered through the trees of the Catoctins for eight decades. Let’s start with the front: “SHANGRI-LA.” That’s the name President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave this place back in 1942, and yes, it’s as whimsical and wildly poetic as it sounds. We knew that name had to anchor this side—etched into the iconic wooden gate, front and center, surrounded by swirling enamel mountains and a sky so deep, it practically breathes.

That gate? It’s the real one. The threshold between the outside world and presidential retreat. And we were OBSESSED with getting the wood grain just right. We experimented, argued, held it up to the light, and probably drove our enamel team a little nuts (sorry, Tim!)—but in the end, it feels warm and lived-in. Like history passed through it yesterday. Behind it, the Catoctins stretch out in electric layers of green and blue enamel, full of movement, like the mountains themselves remember every classified briefing and late-night walk taken under those trees.

Then you get to the presidential ring. We didn’t want flash—we wanted weight. That’s why we etched the names of every U.S. President who has stepped through this retreat, circling the design like a roll call of legacy. From Roosevelt to Biden, each name marks a chapter of history written in pine and granite. We paired it with a rich navy ring—yes, THE Navy Pantone battle raged for weeks—and finished it in a warm copper that feels like you’ve just unearthed something sacred.

Flip the coin and we step into the present. Now the gate reads “CAMP DAVID”—the name Eisenhower gave it to honor his grandson. It’s the same gate, same mountains, but somehow it feels wiser. Stronger. Like Shangri-La grew into itself. The background is familiar but just slightly shifted in color, like dawn after decades of diplomacy. You can almost hear the quiet gravel crunch under presidential footsteps. (We tried to capture that stillness with layered enamel that moves in the light—YES, we totally geeked out over how to do that.)

And around that side? The words “PRESIDENTIAL RETREAT” hold the top arc like a flag unfurling in ceremony. “1942” to “2022” mark the 80-year journey. “80TH ANNIVERSARY” wraps the bottom like a drumbeat—steady, proud, and strong. It’s the kind of inscription you feel in your chest. We kept the copper and navy to unite both halves, because this coin is a conversation between past and present. Between myth and mission. Between moments nobody will ever know… and the few we do.

Holding it now? It’s not loud. It doesn’t need to be. This coin honors the quiet power of place. The stillness where some of the most pivotal decisions in American history unfolded—beneath trees, beside a fire, under stars untouched by streetlight. It’s not just a tribute. It’s an invitation to remember.
